Black History Month Projects

Each teacher at Sunnyside chose an invention created by an African American. Each class researched their inventor and made a presentation. At the end of the month, all projects were put on display in a classroom and each class took a trip around the class learning about the cool inventions that would not be possible without the hard work of African Americans!

House Meeting

Once a month Sunnyside students meet with their House. Each House consists of a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class. The purpose of these meetings is to build relationships and unity among students from different grade levels. Every monthly House Meeting has a different focus. The focus for February was togetherness: Individually we are unique, together we are one big masterpiece! Each student got a puzzle piece and colored it how they wanted. All of the puzzle pieces were collected and put together to create a masterpiece!

Field Trips

3rd grade went on a field trip to the Des Plaines Theater for a play about Fractured Fairy Tales! This tied in perfectly with the Traditional Tales Unit they are currently working on in ELA. 4th grade went on a field trip to watch a Chicago Wolves hockey game! Students had so much fun watching a live game and cheering on our hockey team!

100th Day and Valentine’s Day

We celebrated the 100th Day of School and Valentine’s Day! Students wrote down what they love about Sunnyside on little hearts which were displayed all over the cafeteria! Students wore red/pink or clothes with 100 items glued onto them! Hard to imagine that we have already passed 100 days of school! Each classroom also had their own Valentine’s Day party in which students gifted each other some goodies!

Convos with Principals

Both Sunnyside and MacArthur invited parents to have conversations with the principals. This was a great opportunity for parents to ask questions, have conversations, and build relationships with building principals!

School Citizen of the Year (SCOTY)

The School Citizen of the Year or SCOTY Award was presented to Yatziri Ceron! Yatziri’s 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Barragan, said, “Yatziri exemplifies what a Sunnyside Stallion is by her positive attitude, her acceptance of all students, her respect for everyone, and the effort she puts into her academic work.” Congratulations to Yatziri!

Black History Month Celebration

Jefferson and Sunnyside students performed dances, songs, and so much more for the Black History Month Celebration! Attendees were able to feast on some soul food while enjoying the performances. All students did a fantastic job performing for the crowd!
